– Either of the parents can do the massage for the baby. Any other family member can also do it. Avoid appointing an outside person for Massaging, as one is not aware of the hygiene of the appointed person.
– Wash hands with soap before the massage. Use a clean washed cotton cloth and spread it on the bed. Keep baby on the cloth.
– Any oil can be used. Sometimes, some babies develop rashes after using oil. In such a case, stop using the oil until the rash settles down, and then try a new oil.
– Be gentle. Use gentle firm strokes during the massage. Do not knead or squeeze.
The strokes should not be too light as they may cause a tickling sensation to the baby and can be discomforting.
– Place the baby supine and start from the head, face, chest, arms, palms, tummy, legs, and soles, from above downwards. Repeat after placing the baby in the prone position.
– Talk to the baby while doing a massage.
– After the massage is over, the cotton cloth should be washed and dried in the sunlight.
– Massage is best performed after one hour of feeding when the baby is awake and in a good mood. A massage session can last for 10-15 mins.
– Massage should be a pleasurable experience for the baby. If done very harshly can make the baby uncomfortable and the baby might cry a lot during and after the massage.
