The lower esophageal sphincter is a muscle that separates the esophagus from the stomach. It is responsible for retaining stomach contents in their proper place. In babies, this muscle is not fully matured even after birth. Hence, if you play with or bounce your baby after feeding, they spit up the stomach contents.
